Studying abroad has more advantages than disadvantages. Agree/disagree

Nowadays, many parents would like to send their children to study in other countries. They believe that there are more advantages than disadvantages to the children’s future if the children have an opportunity to study overseas. In my opinion, I think that it is right. I believe that students can benefit from their overseas study.

The first reason is that students can improve their English skill if they study in an English-speaking country. The language environment in an English speaking country is much better than that in these students’ own countries, which helps to improve their English very fast. For example, if a student finishes his high school study in an English-speaking country, his English will be better than that of a university student in his own country.

Another reason is that a student who has an opportunity to study abroad may have better self-discipline. Study abroad means a student has to plan his everyday life without the supervision from his parents, so the student has to learn how to make the plan and take good advantage of every minute. For example, a student may not finish his homework unless he is supervised by his mother. However, if he studies abroad, he may not finish his homework because of the lack of his mother’s supervision. This may result in his failure in his courses. If the student worries about his failure, he may have to require himself to finish his homework without any supervision, which means that he has improved his self-discipline.

Some people think that it is not worth to spend a lot of money on their children’s study abroad. However, I do not agree with them. It is know that it is a lot of money for a student to study overseas, however, the reward of studying overseas is also very high and even much more than that he has spent on studying overseas. Studying overseas is like an investment, which will give a student plenty of reward in the future, so it is a right decision to invest for studying overseas.

All in all, studying abroad not only can improve a study’s English ability in a short time and help a student have better self-discipline, but also is a intelligent investment which will bring a huge reward to a student’s future. Therefore, I hope that more parents and students can think more about studying in other countries and more students can have an opportunity to study overseas in the future. (413)

The feeling of the movie "..."

I was so excited to watch the movie, which was the first one, maybe also the last one, which I have ever seem in New Zealand. I did not like the boy who told the witch the information about his fellows. I appreciated the youngest girl who was brave and pure. However, the movie is designed to be fun for children and a lot of things in the movie are far from the reality, which may lead to a misunderstanding that child can trust other people easily. There are a few unkind people in the world and it will be very dangerous for children if they trust other people without deliberation.

Do you know the key health checks from your 30s to 40s ? Here are the answers.

In your 30s
1. Check your blood---avoid low iron: up to 30% of menstruating women in New Zealand are low in iron, which makes them feel constantly tired.
2. Check your family history---guard against hereditary diseases: be aware of any illnesses that have occurred in your immediate family. There diseases include breast cancer, heart disease and ovarian cancer. If one of your family members has had these diseases, you should be vigilant(careful).

In your 40s
1. Check your blood pressure---prevent heart and blood vessel diseases: blood pressure problems don’t always present symptoms while high blood pressure leads to heart and blood vessel diseases, so it’s a good idea to start having regular tests by age 40
2. Check you blood---guard against diabetes: according to the Focusing on Women report, diabetes is predicted to increase by 58% in Europeans, 132% in Maori and 146% in the Pacific Islanders population by 2011. You will be in a high risk of diabetes in the future.
3. Check your vision---avoid glaucoma & prevent further vision loss: being long-sighted is more common at these ages and so is glaucoma, which is a severe ege disease and has no cure until now. In order to prevent further vision loss, we suggest you to have your eyes checked because medication or surgery are still helpful.

Television is the most important invention of the 20th century. Agree/disagree
Nowadays, television has been very popular in many families in many countries. Some people believe that television is the most important invention of the 20th century, however, I have my opposite opinion. I confess that television gives us a lot of information and helps us know about the world, but television also makes people become lazy and limits people’s imagination, which are the reasons why I can not agree with them.
Most people have become lazier after the invention of television. Now, most people are used to watching television at home, so they have lost their strong desire to read books and do exercise. Children are a good example at this point. Many children addict to watch television, such as cartoons, moves and even soap operas. They love watching television so much that they lose their interest in reading book. To adults, lying on a lounge and watching television is a perfect enjoyment while doing exercise is known to be a difficult thing, so it is not surprising that most adults prefer to watching television rather than doing exercise.
Television also limits people’s imagination. People’s first impressions on many things in the world are from watching television, especially when they were young. However, because television programs have told people about many things in the world and people trust them easily, it may be not necessary for people to think about them any more, which results in the loss of people’s imagination. For example, a lot of foreign people might have never been to China before Chine entered the World Trade Organization (WTO). They knew about China only by watching television. At that time, they believed that China was a rich country because the television had told them about that. However, China has entered the WTO at present and some foreign people may have had a travel in China. They found that what the television programs had had told them in the past was not completely correct. That is true that some parts of China, such as Beijing and Shanghai, are rich, but most parts of China are developing and some parts, such as Qinghai and Xinjiang, are still very poor.
It is believed that people can get information by watching television and they can learn many skills from television programs. However, in my opinion, computer plus internet can do the same things better than television. There are two examples. In the first one, we suppose that people want to know tomorrow’s weather. People can watch today’s news on television and find out what the weather will be tomorrow, however, if people missed the news, they would miss the report about tomorrow’s weather as well. Whereas, by internet, people do not need to worry about this because they can visit observatory’s website at any time and find out what the weather will be tomorrow. The weather reports on this website are even more accurate than those on television for they will be updated at any moment. Another example is learning the road codes to get drive license. People can learn the rode codes and know how to get their driving licenses by watching television, however, they can do the same things by using computer and internet. Further more, they can do the simulative driving license test by visiting the website of the Ministry of Communications, which is very helpful to people to get their driving licenses but is not available by watching television.
Television is a grand invention and helps people to know about the world, but it is not excellent. It makes people become lazy and limits people’s imagination. Therefore, I do not agree the opinion that television is the most important invention of the 20th century. On the other hand, as the widespread application of computer and internet, more and more people would like to spend their spare time in front of computer instead of television. Computer and internet have become more and more important in the modern society while television is the opposite case. Therefore, I consider that computer and internet is more important than television. (650)

A part of the sorry “Rupert and the Space Pirates”
Picture 5

That night, Rupert hid himself behind some bush and spied on the space pirates. When he was watching the space pirates with his binoculars, he found that they were opening boxes one by one. “The boxes must be full of food and other stuff which they have robbed from the villages.” He guessed. Suddenly, he realized that one of the spaces pirates was scared just after he opened a box. Another space pirate was walking toward his fellow when he found his fellow who was terrified. Another two space pirates were talking far from these two space pirate at that time. Obviously, they did not know what had happened here.

One animal that I do not like

I dislike cockroaches, which is based on the four reasons below. Firstly, they live in the entire house and it is difficult to kill them completely. Secondly, they are dirty and full of germs. They crawl into the cupboard and spread the germs to bowls, dishes and chopsticks, which is very dangerous to us. Thirdly, they eat any food they can find. If we put an apple on the table, we would find a big hole on the apple the next day. Fourthly, they expel their faeces anywhere. We can find them under the television, under the beds or inside the drawers. Therefore, I hate cockroaches and I hope that there are no cockroaches on the earth.

Dear Sir/Madam:

I am a resident of Hamilton and I want to tell you one thing about my neighbour.
My neighbour who is a young working mother has three children aged 8, 10 and 12. She works during the day as well as in the evening sometimes. As a result, her children often have to stay at home without others after they get back home from school and sometimes they stay at home alone in the evening as well. I found that it had happened for more than fifteen times last month. Yesterday, I talked about it with the mother, but she did not take it as granted and she believed it was ok.
I realize that it is illegal as well as dangerous to her children. That is the reason why I write to Child, Youth and Family. I hope you can take steps to help my neighbour. If you want to get more information, please contact me. My telephone number is 123456. (162)

Yours sincerely
Ben

In your opinion, which is more important, developing the economy or protecting the environment?

In my opinion, the answers to this question will be different to different countries and are based on the circumstances in these countries. In my country, China, developing the economy is more important than protecting the environment, which is also based on the circumstances in China.
Despite China has developed its economy for decades, China is not rich and still a developing country. The average income of people in China is only one tenth of that in the United States. Most people in China are still struggling for food and clothes, so they have to work hard everyday. There are still tens of millions of people living under the poverty line (they earn less than one US dollar each day.) Therefore, developing the economy is the most important thing and needs to be done first in China.

China does not have enough money to protect the environment. If a country want to protect the environment, the government of the country must invest a lot of money to buy the advanced equipments to dispose waste water, waste air and rubbish. However, China is not rich and the Chinese government has spent most of its money on developing the education and improving the medical conditions, which are more important and urgent to Chinese people, so there is only a little money left for protecting the environment and it means that the government can do few things to protect the environment. Therefore, in China, it is more important to develop the economy, which can provide money for the government to protect the environment.

In China, the awareness of protecting the environment is still very weak. some people downplay the importance of protecting the environment. They litter everywhere or dump waste water into rivers. They do not have the habit of protecting the environment, such as gathering and separating their domestic rubbish. Some factories’ owners believe that gaining profit is the most important thing, so their factories expel their waste air into the air and dump their industry waste water into the rivers without disposing them before. However, in western countries, people will not do the same because they all have good education and understand the importance of protecting the environment. They consider it as their responsibilities to protecting the environment. Therefore the environment in China can be really protected only after Chinese people’s awareness of protecting the environment has been improved and been as strong as people in western countries, which has close relationship with the development of the economy, so developing the economy needs to be done first in contrast to protecting the environment.

All in all, though Chinese government wants to do more to protect the environment, the limitation of the circumstances in China makes it impossible to be done at present. However, as the economy of China develops increasingly, the government and people in China will do more to protect the environment and I am convinced that the environment of China will become better and better in the future. Deforestation

Nowadays, deforestation is a very severe problem in the world. Every minute, an area of forest equal to 20 football or rugby fields is lost. The global climate is affected by deforestation. Deforestation has many causes, including feeding growing numbers of people and commercial logging, and it leads to soil erosion and extinction of species.

The first reason is feeding growing numbers of people. There are more and more people living in the earth while the land is insufficient to feed growing numbers of people, so people have to find some ways to solve the problem and deforestation is one of them that people have chosen. After deforesting in an area, people can plant crops or build houses there, which helps to accommodate more people in the area.

Another cause of deforestation is commercial logging. Some countries are not rich, but there are some forests in these countries and they believe that it is their resource which can be freely dealt with. By commercial logging, these countries can earn money to help people have a better life.

However, every thing has two sides. After an area has been deforested, the soil in the area will be destroyed because of the loss of forests and it can not keep as much fertilizer as it did in the past. As time goes by, crops can not be planted in the soil and eventually the soil becomes desert. The loss of protection from forests also makes soil not easy to be conserved and the soil may drop into rivers, which results in the rising of river bottoms. The Yellow River in China is a one of the example. The river has suffered from it for decades and now its bottom is higher than both of its banks in the last part of the river.

Deforestation also causes extinction of species. Because of the change of the habitat of some living beings, these species can not suit their new living environment and has to extinct, while forests contain more than half of all species on our planet.

In conclusion, forests are very important to human beings and our planet. They help to keep the balance of ecological environment. Therefore, in order to give ourselves comfortable environment to live, we should protect forests and stop deforestation.

Survival is a matter of luck

In the world, every year there are several disasters, such earthquakes and storms, which kill a lot of people. However, there are still some persons surviving in each disaster even if the circumstances are very bad. Some people believe they survived because of good luck, but in my opinion, it is only one of the reasons for survival and some other conditions are also necessary for survival.

In a disaster, luck is essential for survival. If someone has bad luck, he will die during the disaster. In fact, most people have bad luck when a disaster happens and they are killed at that time. If someone has bad luck, no one finds him and rescues him even if he does not die during the disaster. Some people are killed because of this in a disaster usually. If someone has bad luck, he will still die because of lack of food and medicine even if he has been rescued after the disaster. So the people who can survive during a disaster must have good luck.

However, luck is only one of the reasons for survival, in my opinion, and strong mind and strong bodies are also necessary for survival. First, the chance of survival will be higher if someone has strong mind. The people with strong mind will always think about how they can survive and will not give up even if the circumstances are very bad, unlike another people, who do not have strong mind and give up easily. So when people hear about the stories of survivals, they always admire the willingness of the subjects in the stories. Second, strong body is also necessary for people to survive during a disaster. If someone is very strong, they can survive for a longer time than others when there are no food and water. If someone is very strong, he is not easy to be hurt and has more energy to move big stones in a disaster, which help him to survive. Therefore strong bodies are useful for survival in a disaster.

In a conclusion, I agree that survival is a matter of luck in a certain extent, but only with luck, people can not survive if they do not have strong mind and strong bodies. (382)
